In this anthology, Barrell and Bull have interpreted 'Pastoral' in a wide sense to mean writing about society in terms of an ideal country life. They have therefore included, in addition to formal eclogues, examples of pastoral drama, country-house poems, poems about agriculture in the style of Virgil's Georgics, and poems that satirize or denounce the pastoral tradition.
