“Luke: Where the hell are you going?
“Ace: War!”
Lewis and Lewis tell of The Jayhawkers of the Civil War, abolitionists and free soilers in Illinois and Kansas, who carried on a guerilla warfare. The play centers on Asa Burdette, a Jayhawker who talked and prayed his way from Kansas camp meetings to the United States Senate in order that the slaves might be freed and the union preserved forever. But in Washington the war gets on Asa's nerves. Sick of death and destruction, he joins an old crony in crooked politics in a scheme to unite the Blue and the Gray against Maximilian of Mexico.
