Niño: Child of the Mexican Revolution by Andrés Iduarte (1971) Vintage Hardcover Book
“When the first shots sounded, some of the children ran, forgetting their ‘doves,’ which fell Heaven knows where; or else they tied the string to a shrub or stone, with the hope of another day running down the cord and recovering them. I couldn't abandon my glorious plaything. I retrieved it as fast as I could, winding the string haphazardly on the spool. When I had finished I was alone and I entered the city by way of Lerdo Street.”
Iduarte’s autobiography about growing up during the Mexican Revolution (roughly from 1911 to 1920) which won praise when it was first published in Mexico under the title Un Niño en la Revolución Mexicana. This edition, a sensitive English translation, conveys all the grace and impact of the original Spanish.
