The Chinese Theory of Art: Translations from the Masters of Chinese Art by Lin Yutang (1967) Vintage Hardcover Book
This volume takes the form of an anthology of writings that trace the development of Chinese art from the earliest literary reference to painting in Confucius to the vital essays of Shih-t'ao and Shen Tsung-chien more than twenty centuries later. Yutang's selections cover every aspect of technique and subject matter, including the Six Canons of Chinese painting, while the scope of the book is widened further by the inclusion of important essays on collecting and connoisseurship, on the pricing and appraisal of paintings, and on calligraphy.
This copy is a vintage reprint by Chin Shan Books which was known during its time as a producer of “pirated” copies of popular works—a scarce, unique find.
